Marsalforn Bay

Bajja ta' Marsalforn

Marsalforn is Gozo's main seaside resort — a small town of restaurants, hotels and bars along a rocky bay on the north coast. It lacks a significant sandy beach but compensates with a lively promenade, crystal-clear water, and the extraordinary Marsalforn salt pans just west of town.

Marsalforn as a base for Gozo

Marsalforn is the most practical resort base in Gozo — it has the greatest concentration of restaurants, bars and accommodation outside Victoria, with year-round transport to the capital. The bay is sheltered, and while the main swimming area is rocky, several concrete lidos and rock platforms line the waterfront for easy water access.

The Marsalforn Salt Pans

The iconic Marsalforn Salt Pans stretch for nearly 1 km west of the town along the cliff base, cut into the rock by hand over many centuries. The pans are still active in summer — salt is harvested from seawater pools that have evaporated in the Mediterranean sun. The walk along the base of the cliffs past the pans is one of the most scenic short walks in Gozo.

Eating and drinking at Marsalforn

Marsalforn's promenade has the best concentration of seafood restaurants in Gozo outside of Xlendi. Several have been operating for decades and are popular with Maltese families on weekend trips from the mainland. The village also has a more active nightlife scene than most other Gozo towns.

Frequently asked questions

Does Marsalforn have a sandy beach?

The main bay is rocky with concrete lido areas rather than a sandy beach. There is a small sandy section at the eastern end of the bay. Ramla Bay, Gozo's main sandy beach, is 6 km east.

What are the salt pans near Marsalforn?

The Marsalforn Salt Pans are ancient rock-cut pools along the cliff base, still used to harvest sea salt in summer. They stretch for nearly 1 km west of Marsalforn and are a significant historic and scenic attraction unique to Gozo.

Is Marsalforn good for families?

Yes — it has good facilities, calm water in the bay, family-friendly restaurants, and easy access by bus and car. The rocky entry to the water is less suitable for very young children than a sandy beach.
