About Mosta
Mosta — the Rotunda town: history, attractions, transport and living
Mosta is a town in the Northern District of central Malta, best known for the Rotunda of Mosta — the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady (Santa Marija) — which has one of the largest church domes in Europe.
Where is Mosta?
Mosta lies in central Malta in the Northern District, on the route between the harbour area and the north of the island. It borders Naxxar, Lija, Attard and the Mtarfa/Mdina area, and sits near the Victoria Lines, the 19th-century British defensive wall crossing the island.
History of Mosta
The Rotunda of Mosta was built in the 19th century, with a design inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, attributed to Giorgio Grognet de Vassé, and funded and built largely by the local community. During the Second World War, on 9 April 1942, a German bomb pierced the dome while people were gathered inside for Mass and did not explode — an event remembered locally as the "Mosta miracle." The surrounding area also contains earlier remains, including the Ta' Bistra catacombs.

The replica wartime bomb — displayed in the church in memory of the 1942 event. Ta' Bistra Catacombs — a Roman-era burial complex on the edge of the town. The Victoria Lines — the British-era defensive wall running nearby across the island.
Transport in Mosta
Mosta is a major road junction in central Malta and is well served by buses connecting the harbour area, the central towns and the north via Malta Public Transport. Its central position makes it a common transfer point for routes across the island.
Living in Mosta
Mosta is one of Malta's larger towns, with a full range of shops, schools, services and a busy town centre around the Rotunda. It offers a central island location with good road links, away from the coast. Cost and housing assessments should be based on current market data.
