About Birżebbuġa
Birżebbuġa — south coast town: Għar Dalam, Pretty Bay, Freeport and living
Birżebbuġa is a coastal town in the South Eastern District of Malta, set around St George's Bay on the island's south-eastern shore. It is known for the sandy Pretty Bay, the prehistoric cave of Għar Dalam, the Borġ in-Nadur archaeological site and its proximity to the Malta Freeport container terminal.
Where is Birżebbuġa?
Birżebbuġa lies on the south-eastern coast of the main island of Malta, around St George's Bay (Birżebbuġa Bay) and Pretty Bay, between Marsaxlokk to the east and the Kalafrana / Freeport area to the south. Administratively it belongs to the South Eastern District. The town faces Marsaxlokk Bay, one of the largest natural harbours on the island.
History of Birżebbuġa
The area around Birżebbuġa holds some of Malta's oldest evidence of human and animal life. Għar Dalam ("Cave of Darkness") contains stratified bone deposits of Pleistocene animals such as dwarf elephants and hippopotami, and its upper layers hold the earliest evidence of human settlement on Malta. Nearby, the Borġ in-Nadur site preserves remains of a Bronze Age village and a megalithic temple. In the early modern period the coast was guarded by St Lucian Tower, a large coastal watchtower built by the Order of St John in the early 17th century. In 1989 the Malta Summit between US and Soviet leaders was held aboard ships in Marsaxlokk Bay off Birżebbuġa.
