About Floriana
Floriana — fortified suburb: Floriana Lines, St Publius and living
Floriana (Il-Furjana) is a fortified town in the Southern Harbour District of Malta, immediately outside Valletta on the same peninsula. It is known for the Floriana Lines fortifications, the church of St Publius and the Granaries (Il-Fosos), and houses several government offices.
Where is Floriana?
Floriana lies on the same peninsula as Valletta, immediately outside the capital's City Gate, between Valletta and the mainland (toward Marsa, Pietà and Ħamrun). It belongs to the Southern Harbour District and is enclosed by its own line of fortifications.
History of Floriana
Floriana grew up on the landward approach to Valletta, behind the Floriana Lines — outer fortifications designed in the 17th century by the Italian military engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani to strengthen the defence of the capital. The parish church is dedicated to St Publius, regarded as the first bishop of Malta. The Granaries (Il-Fosos), a large paved square with underground grain stores, is used for major public gatherings. Floriana suffered heavy bombing in the Second World War.
