Choosing where to stay in Malta is essentially choosing which version of the island you want — cultural capital, seafront resort town, historic village, sandy-beach north or rural Gozo. This guide matches the right base to the right trip.
By traveller type
- First-time visitors / no car — Sliema or St Julian's. Central, walkable, dense with hotels and restaurants, ferry and frequent buses to Valletta. The default safe choice.
- Culture and atmosphere — Valletta. Sleep inside the UNESCO capital. Boutique hotels, restored townhouses, higher prices, quieter nights.
- Beaches and families — The north — Mellieħa, Buġibba, Qawra, St Paul's Bay. Sandy beaches, resort hotels, space, Gozo/Comino ferry nearby.
- Nightlife — Paceville / St Julian's. Best for going out, worst for sleep — factor that into your hotel choice.
- Authenticity and value — The Three Cities. Historic, residential, waterfront, cheaper, ferry to the capital.
- Quiet and character — Mdina, Rabat or the Three Villages. Calm and leafy — best with a car.
- Nature and diving — Gozo. Farmhouse stays, world-class diving at Dwejra, rural calm.
Booking tips
High season (June–September) is the busiest and priciest period; spring and autumn offer better value and milder weather. If travelling without a car, stay near a harbour ferry pier or a major bus corridor.
When booking, confirm whether 'sea view' means open sea, harbour view or a distant glimpse. Many older buildings in Valletta have no lift — check if that matters for your stay. Confirm parking availability if you're hiring a car.
- Peak season
- June–September
- Best value season
- March–May and October–November
- Car-free bases
- Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, Three Cities
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest area to stay in Malta?
The Three Cities, inland villages and Gozo outside peak summer generally offer the lowest prices. St Paul's Bay and Buġibba have a large supply of budget-friendly package hotels and apartments.
Is Valletta a good base?
Excellent for culture-focused trips — you're sleeping inside a UNESCO World Heritage city, walkable to everything, with ferry connections to Sliema. Trade-offs: limited parking, no beach, higher prices, quieter at night.
Do you need a car in Malta?
Not in Sliema, St Julian's, Valletta or the Three Cities — all have good buses and harbour ferries. A car is helpful for reaching the north's beaches, Mdina, inland villages and the Gozo ferry terminal at Ċirkewwa.
