What is Golden Bay like?

Golden Bay faces northwest, giving it gentler waves than south-facing beaches and spectacular sunset views. The sand is fine and golden — genuinely golden, not the pale yellow of many Mediterranean beaches. The bay is sheltered enough for young children to swim safely in calm conditions, though summer afternoons can bring a light chop when the north wind picks up. Behind the beach sits a café-restaurant complex and changing facilities.

How to get to Golden Bay

By car, Golden Bay is 40 minutes from Valletta via the Mosta–Mellieħa road; follow signs from the Mellieħa bypass. A large paid car park sits directly above the beach. By bus, route 44 from Valletta runs seasonally in summer. The nearest accommodation cluster is Mellieħa, 3.5 km away — many hotels run a shuttle service in peak season.

Best time to visit Golden Bay

May–June and September–October for the best balance of warm water and manageable crowds. July–August sees the beach at full capacity by 10 am. Early mornings in high season are significantly quieter. The beach is accessible year-round; winter swimming is possible for cold-water enthusiasts, though facilities close.

Nearby options

Ġnejna Bay, 2 km south over the ridge, is rockier but usually far quieter. Għajn Tuffieħa (Red Tower Bay), reached via a 200-step staircase, offers a more rugged alternative 1 km south. The nearby Mellieħa locality hub links to hotels, restaurants and onward transport.
