About Xaghra
Xagħra — Gozo
Xagħra is one of Gozo's largest and most rewarding villages, spread across a sunny plateau in the north of the island. It holds the prehistoric Ġgantija temples, looks down on the red sands of Ramla Bay, and gathers around a handsome square dominated by its great parish church.
Where is Xagħra?
Xagħra stands on a plateau in northern Gozo, a short distance north-east of Victoria. Below its northern edge lies Ramla Bay, and the village commands wide views over the surrounding countryside.
History of Xagħra
The plateau has been inhabited since the Neolithic, when the temple builders raised Ġgantija more than 5,000 years ago. Nearby, the Xagħra Stone Circle was an important prehistoric burial complex. The modern village grew in the medieval and early-modern periods as one of the principal settlements of rural Gozo, its prosperity reflected in its grand parish church.
