About Għajnsielem
Għajnsielem — Gozo
Għajnsielem is the gateway to Gozo: the first village travellers meet as they step off the ferry at Mġarr. Stretching from the busy harbour up to a hillside church, and administering the island of Comino, it links Gozo to the wider world and to its most famous lagoon.
Where is Għajnsielem?
Għajnsielem occupies the south-eastern corner of Gozo, taking in the Mġarr ferry harbour where boats from Ċirkewwa on Malta arrive. The village administratively includes the small island of Comino.
History of Għajnsielem
The name refers to a spring ("għajn") in the area. The settlement grew around the harbour and the routes inland, becoming the principal point of contact between Gozo and Malta. Mġarr developed into the island's main port, while Għajnsielem expanded as a residential village. The nearby Mediterranean village of Mgarr ix-Xini and the islet of Comino fall within its sphere.
