About Gharghur
Għargħur — a hilltop village in north Malta with wide views
Għargħur is a village in the Northern District of Malta, on a hilltop north of Naxxar and Birkirkara. It is one of the smaller localities on the island, known for its elevated position and panoramic views.
Where is Għargħur?
Għargħur stands on a ridge in the north of Malta, above the Victoria Lines escarpment, in the Northern District. It borders Naxxar, San Ġwann and the Madliena area, overlooking the surrounding countryside and the sea to the north.
History
Għargħur is one of Malta's older parishes, with a parish dedicated to St Bartholomew. It has traditionally been an agricultural village, its hilltop position giving it a commanding view but limiting urban growth. The Victoria Lines, the 19th-century British defensive wall, pass near the village.
What to see
Parish Church of St Bartholomew — the village's Baroque parish church. Victoria Lines — 19th-century British defensive wall accessible near the village. Panoramic views — wide vistas over the central and northern plains from the hilltop.
