About Saint Julian's
St Julian's — coastal town: bays, nightlife, transport and living
St Julian's (San Ġiljan) is a coastal town in the Northern Harbour District of Malta, north of Sliema. It is one of the island's main tourism and entertainment centres, built around a series of bays and home to the Paceville nightlife district.
Where is St Julian's?
St Julian's lies on the north-eastern coast of Malta, immediately north of Sliema, in the Northern Harbour District. It is organised around several inlets — most notably Spinola Bay and Balluta Bay — and includes the Paceville entertainment area and the Portomaso development. It borders Sliema to the south and Swieqi and Pembroke inland and to the north.
History of St Julian's
St Julian's developed around Spinola Bay, where the Spinola Palace and gardens were built in the 18th century by the Order of St John. Originally a fishing and summer-residence area, it expanded rapidly through the 20th century as tourism grew, with large hotels and the Paceville entertainment district developing along the coast. The Portomaso complex, including a marina and one of Malta's tallest towers, was developed around the turn of the 21st century.
What to see in St Julian's
Spinola Bay — a picturesque inlet lined with restaurants and traditional boats, with the historic Spinola Palace nearby. Balluta Bay — a bay on the Sliema side framed by the neo-Gothic Carmelite church. Paceville — Malta's main nightlife district, with clubs, bars and the Dragonara complex. Portomaso — a marina, residential and business development with a landmark tower.
Transport in St Julian's
St Julian's is connected by bus to Sliema, Valletta and the rest of Malta via Malta Public Transport, with major routes along the coast road. Ride-hailing services (such as Bolt and eCabs) are heavily used in the area, especially around Paceville at night. Parking is limited; multi-storey car parks serve the busier zones.
Living in St Julian's
St Julian's is a busy, central coastal town with extensive dining, hotels and services. It is popular with tourists, expats and remote workers, which is reflected in property and rental levels. Areas closest to Paceville are lively at night, while bays such as Spinola and Balluta and the Portomaso area are quieter and more residential.
