About Saint Lawrence
San Lawrenz — Gozo
San Lawrenz is a small, peaceful village in the west of Gozo, set close to the spectacular Dwejra coast. Quiet and unspoilt, with a fine parish church and a craft village on its edge, it is the gateway to the Inland Sea and Fungus Rock.
Where is San Lawrenz?
San Lawrenz lies in the west of Gozo, beyond Għarb, and is the nearest village to the famous Dwejra coast.
History of San Lawrenz
San Lawrenz grew slowly as a remote agricultural village in the far west of Gozo. Its isolation and beauty have long attracted artists and writers seeking quiet. The Dwejra coast below has been important for fishing and, historically, for the closely guarded Fungus Rock, whose rare plant was once prized by the Knights as a supposed medicine.
What to see in San Lawrenz
Dwejra — the Inland Sea, the tunnel to the open sea, and Fungus Rock. The Ta' Dbieġi Crafts Village. The village square and the parish church of St Lawrence. Cliff walks and some of Gozo's best diving and snorkelling at Dwejra.
Transport in San Lawrenz
San Lawrenz and Dwejra are served by Gozo bus from Victoria; a car gives the most flexibility for the coast.
Living in San Lawrenz
San Lawrenz offers a peaceful, rural way of life amid striking scenery. Services are limited to the essentials, but the village is prized for its calm, its sunsets and its proximity to one of Gozo's natural wonders.
