Malta Business Registry Data

The company data on this site comes from the Malta Open Data portal (data.gov.mt), published by the Malta Business Registry (MBR) as open data. The dataset covers all legal entities registered with the MBR since 1965.

What we publish

For each company page we display only data that is publicly available in the MBR Open Data and carries low PII risk for legal entities:

• Company name (legal entity name as registered with MBR)
• Registration number (e.g. "C 12345")
• Company type (Ltd, Partnership, Overseas, etc.)
• Registration state (Active only — we do not index struck-off or defunct entities)
• Locality (town/village, not street address)
• Business sector / area of activity (as classified by MBR)

What we do not publish

• Street address (omitted — sole trader risk for home addresses)
• Status effective date
• Struck-off, in-dissolution, or inactive companies (not indexed)
• Director names, shareholders, or beneficial owners (not in dataset)
• Financial data (not in dataset)

Quality gates

The 1,000-company pilot index uses a quality score (0–10). Only companies scoring ≥ 8 are indexed:

• +3 points: state = Active
• +2 points: specific business sector (not "No Activity")
• +1 point each: name present, registration number, locality, street, status date

Locality hub pages are only created for localities with ≥ 20 registered companies, ≥ 5 active companies, and ≥ 3 distinct business sectors. Activity pages require ≥ 50 active companies.

Limitations

• The dataset is a point-in-time snapshot; real-time status may differ from MBR records
• 39% of entries lack a classified business activity in the source data
• Locality names in the MBR dataset use historical variants mapped to our 68 PLACES slugs
• This pilot covers 1,000 companies; the full 52,004 active companies are at registry.mbr.mt
