Malta Telecom Guide: SIM Cards, Mobile Networks and Internet

Everything you need to know about mobile networks, SIM cards, prepaid options and home broadband in Malta — for visitors, expats and residents.

Updated 2026-06-23 · 5 min read · ImaginaMalta Editorial

Malta has three main mobile and broadband operators — GO, Epic and Vodafone Malta — with 4G coverage across the island and 5G expanding in urban centres. As an EU member state, Malta follows EU roaming rules, which means no extra charges for EU SIM holders travelling within the EU. This guide covers what to buy, where to buy it, and what to expect from Malta's networks.

Getting a SIM card

Prepaid SIM cards are available at Malta International Airport arrivals hall, all three operator stores, and major supermarkets (Budget, Lidl, Welbee's). You will need a passport or EU ID card to register — EU regulations require identity verification for all SIM purchases.

Typical tourist prepaid bundles include 10–20 GB of data and unlimited calls within Malta. Prices range from approximately €10–15 for a starter pack. All three operators sell airport SIMs, but GO has the most prominent kiosk at arrivals.

EU roaming rules

Malta is a full EU member state. If you have a SIM from another EU or EEA country, your standard plan's data, calls and SMS allowance applies in Malta with no additional roaming surcharge — this is guaranteed by EU Roam Like at Home rules. Non-EU SIMs (UK, US, etc.) will be charged at each operator's international roaming rate; check with your home provider before travelling.

Home broadband

GO is the incumbent fixed-line operator and offers the most widespread fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) coverage across Malta and Gozo. Epic operates a cable (HFC) and fiber network concentrated in the main populated areas. Standard residential broadband speeds are 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps depending on the plan and area.

Expats and long-stay residents typically contract directly with GO or Epic. Both offer combined packages with TV. Installation lead times can be 1–3 weeks; short-term rentals often include broadband as part of the property.

Emergency and useful numbers

The EU emergency number 112 works on all networks in Malta and reaches police, ambulance and fire services. Malta's international dialling code is +356. There are no area codes — all Maltese numbers are eight digits starting with 2 (landlines) or 9 (mobile). To dial internationally from Malta, prefix with 00.

Coverage gaps

Coverage across the main island of Malta is near-universal. Gozo has good 4G coverage in Victoria and the main coastal villages; some rural inland areas may drop to 3G. Comino has minimal coverage. Underground areas — notably the Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni and some road tunnels — have no signal.
