Malta's nightlife is concentrated in a small grid of streets called Paceville, tucked between Sliema and St Julian's in the northeast of the island. Understanding the geography matters: staying on the right side of St Julian's puts you five minutes from the clubs; staying in Sliema puts you a 25-minute walk away.

Paceville and St Julian's

Paceville is a compact nightlife district — a few streets of clubs, bars and restaurants that runs loud from around 10pm. The area is technically within St Julian's, north of Spinola Bay and south of Portomaso. Most of Malta's clubs, late-night bars and casino venues are concentrated here. St Julian's has 34 licensed hotels, several of which are within a short walk of Paceville. The Spinola Bay area of St Julian's, just south of Paceville, offers a range of restaurants for pre-drinks dining without the nightclub noise.

Alternatives to Paceville

If full club nightlife is not the priority but evening atmosphere is, two alternatives stand out. Valletta's Strait Street had a historical reputation as a sailors' entertainment strip and has been revived as a bar-and-restaurant lane — good for wine bars and live music without the club atmosphere. Spinola Bay in St Julian's is a pleasant waterfront with outdoor restaurants and a more relaxed evening feel. Marsaxlokk on Sunday mornings offers the best atmosphere in a different direction — the fish market and seafront restaurants.
