What is Għar Dalam?

Għar Dalam is a phreatic cave whose stratified deposits acted like a natural archive, trapping the bones of animals and traces of people over many thousands of years. Its name means "Cave of Darkness". The site combines the cave itself with a museum displaying finds excavated from its layers.

Where is Għar Dalam?

The cave lies in the south-east of Malta, near Birżebbuġa, in a valley not far from the coast at Marsaxlokk Bay.

History of Għar Dalam

The cave's deposits are layered by age. Lower levels contained the fossil bones of Pleistocene animals that once lived on Malta when it was connected to or close to mainland Europe — including dwarf elephants, hippopotami and deer that had evolved to small island sizes. Higher up, the layers preserved pottery and other remains marking the arrival of the first farming communities, generally regarded as the earliest evidence of human settlement on the islands. Scientific excavation from the late 19th and 20th centuries established Għar Dalam as a key site for understanding Malta's deep past.

What to see at Għar Dalam

  • The accessible front section of the cave itself.
  • The museum displays of fossil bones, including dwarf elephant and hippo remains.
  • Exhibits on the earliest human settlers and their pottery.
  • The surrounding valley and nature.

Significance

Għar Dalam is fundamental to two stories at once: the natural history of Malta's Ice Age fauna, and the arrival of the first humans. Few sites anywhere connect palaeontology and prehistory so directly, which makes it one of the most scientifically important places on the islands.
