What is Pretty Bay like?

Pretty Bay is a proper sandy beach — unusual in the south of Malta, where rocky coastline dominates. The bay faces northeast and is well-sheltered from the prevailing northwest wind, giving calm swimming conditions most of the year. Beach beds and umbrellas are available for hire; a seasonal kiosk and toilets complete the facilities. The sand is a mix of fine white and golden grains.

The Freeport question

The Malta Freeport container terminal is visible to the south of Pretty Bay. For some visitors this is a deal-breaker visually; in practice the beach itself is separated from the port by a significant distance and the view is only of cranes and container ships on the southern horizon, not immediately adjacent. The water quality is monitored and generally rated as good.

Getting to Pretty Bay

Bus route 82 from Valletta runs to Birżebbuġa village year-round; the beach is a 10-minute walk from the bus stop. By car, the drive from Valletta takes about 25 minutes south via the main road. A car park sits alongside the beach. Birżebbuġa village has several cafés and restaurants.
