How ImaginaMalta collects and presents education data for Malta and Gozo — sources, quality gates, limitations and what we do not publish.
Primary source: OpenStreetMap
Education data on this site is derived from OpenStreetMap (OSM) — a free, open geographic database maintained by a global community of volunteers. OSM data is licensed under the Open Database Licence (ODbL 1.0).
Official education.gov.mt source is blocked from this host. Education data reflects what OSM contributors have mapped at a point in time and is not verified or complete. Individual records may be outdated, incomplete or incorrectly tagged. We show OSM data as-is with appropriate caveats.

Datasets
Source: OpenStreetMap (amenity=school)
Includes primary, secondary, special and private schools. No official school registry or government source available.
Source: OpenStreetMap (amenity=language_school)
Courses, fees and accreditation must be verified directly with the school.
Source: OpenStreetMap (amenity=university)
Includes universities, colleges and tertiary institutions. Programmes and accreditation must be verified.
Source: OpenStreetMap (amenity=childcare)
Staffing, capacity and licensing must be verified directly with the centre.
Locality assignment
Each OSM record is assigned to one of the 68 canonical Malta/Gozo locality slugs used across ImaginaMalta. Assignment uses a deterministic mapping table covering Maltese article forms (Il-, Is-, Ir- prefixes), uppercase variants, Maltese-language names, and known sub-locality mappings. Records that cannot be reliably assigned are excluded from locality pages.
Indexation policy
Locality education pages are only published where there is meaningful coverage. The gate requires either ≥2 total education records, OR the presence of a language school, OR the presence of higher education. Unmapped or unknown locality records are never published.
What we do not publish
- School fees, tuition or payment information
- Admission procedures or entry requirements
- Curriculum details or subject offerings
- School rankings, ratings or quality assessments
- Staffing levels or staff credentials
- Student examination results or performance metrics
- Official school registry or government directory claim
- Ratings, reviews or user-generated content
- Real-time enrolment status or availability
- Data from proprietary sources or Google Maps scraping
Critical limitations
- Not an official directory: This is a location guide based on OSM data, not an official school registry.
- Official source blocked: education.gov.mt is not accessible from this host. Data is OSM-only, not verified with the Ministry of Education.
- May be incomplete: 184 schools found, but the actual number may be higher.
- Verify admissions and fees: For critical decisions regarding education, always verify details directly with the school or official education sources.
Corrections & updates
If you spot an error, the best fix is to update the original OpenStreetMap record — corrections there will flow through to all OSM-derived directories including this one. Last data snapshot: 2026-06-20.
