The Cittadella, Victoria (Gozo) — the fortified citadel of Gozo

The Cittadella is the fortified hilltop citadel at the centre of Victoria, the capital of Gozo. Occupied since antiquity and rebuilt by the Order of St John in bastioned form between 1599 and 1622, it holds the island's cathedral and museums within its walls and was, for centuries, the place where Gozitans sheltered from corsair raids.

What is the Cittadella?

The Cittadella is the walled citadel that crowns the centre of Victoria, the capital of Gozo. It is the historic core of the island, combining medieval streets, the Gozo cathedral and a ring of bastioned fortifications, and it offers sweeping views across the whole of Gozo.

Where is the Cittadella?

The Cittadella rises on a hill in the middle of Victoria, directly above the main square, It-Tokk. From its walls almost every village of Gozo can be seen, a reminder of its role as the island's stronghold.

History of the Cittadella

The hilltop has been occupied since the Bronze Age and served as a Punic-Roman acropolis and a medieval town. After repeated corsair raids — most devastatingly in 1551, when much of the population of Gozo was carried off — the Order of St John rebuilt the southern fortifications in bastioned form between 1599 and 1622. Until 1637 Gozitans were required by law to spend the night inside the Cittadella for safety. The site was extensively restored in the 2010s.

What to see at the Cittadella

  • Cathedral of the Assumptionbuilt by Lorenzo Gafà (1697–1711), with a famous trompe-l'œil painted 'dome' on a flat ceiling.
  • The bastioned wallsramparts with panoramic views over Gozo.
  • Museumsarchaeology, folklore and the old prison.
  • The medieval lanesnarrow streets of the old town within the walls.

Significance

The Cittadella concentrates the whole history of Gozo in one fortified hill, from prehistoric acropolis to Baroque cathedral. Its walls tell the story of an island repeatedly raided from the sea, and its restoration has made it the principal heritage attraction of Gozo.

Visiting the Cittadella

The streets and ramparts of the Cittadella are freely accessible, while the cathedral and individual museums charge admission. Opening hours and ticket prices vary and should be checked with Heritage Malta and the cathedral before visiting; the climb up from It-Tokk is short but steep.
