What is Fort Rinella?
Fort Rinella is a compact coastal fort built by the British in the late 19th century for a single, extraordinary purpose: to mount one of the giant Armstrong 100-ton guns, among the largest muzzle-loading guns ever made. Today it is a living-history museum run by the heritage foundation Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna.
Where is Fort Rinella?
The fort stands near Kalkara, on the high ground near the mouth of the Grand Harbour, on the south-eastern side of the harbour entrance.
History of Fort Rinella
Fort Rinella was built between 1878 and 1886, at a time when Britain feared the powerful ironclad warships of rival navies in the Mediterranean. The answer was the 100-ton gun, a colossal weapon capable of firing huge armour-piercing shells; Malta received two such guns, one at Rinella and one across the harbour. Advances in technology soon made these guns obsolete, and they were never fired in anger. The fort was later restored and reopened as a museum.
