What is the Manoel Theatre?

The Manoel Theatre is a small Baroque playhouse in the heart of Valletta and one of the oldest theatres still in regular use anywhere in Europe. Its horseshoe-shaped auditorium is lined with three tiers of boxes decorated in gold leaf, beneath a painted ceiling. It serves as Malta's national theatre, staging opera, concerts, ballet and drama.

History of the Manoel Theatre

The theatre was built in 1731 at the expense of Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, who intended it as a place of "honest entertainment" for the people of the city. It has operated almost continuously since then, surviving changes of ruler and the upheavals of war. Restorations over the centuries have preserved its 18th-century character, including the celebrated gilded boxes and painted ceiling.
