What is St Peter's Pool?
St Peter's Pool is a natural bathing place formed by smooth, flat shelves of limestone that step down into a sheltered inlet of deep, clear water. There is no beach in the usual sense — swimmers enter from the rocks — which gives it a wild, unspoilt feel.
Where is St Peter's Pool?
The pool is on the Delimara peninsula, the headland east of the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, in the south-east of Malta. It is reached by a country road and a short walk over the rocks.
Landscape and character
The pale rock has been weathered into natural ledges and platforms, some of which are used for sunbathing and for jumping into the water below. The inlet is partly sheltered, so the water is often calm and exceptionally clear, making it good for snorkelling. Because it has remained undeveloped, it keeps the character of a local secret — though it is now well known.
What to see and do
- Swimming and snorkelling in the clear, deep water.
- Cliff and ledge jumping for confident swimmers (judge depth and conditions carefully).
- Sunbathing on the flat rock shelves.
- Walks along the Delimara peninsula.
Significance
St Peter's Pool is one of the best-loved natural swimming spots in Malta and a fine example of the island's rocky, undeveloped coastline. It offers a very different experience from the sandy resort beaches of the north.
Visiting St Peter's Pool
The pool is free and open but has essentially no facilities: no lifeguard, limited shade and no shops nearby, so bring water, sun protection and suitable footwear for the rocks. Entry is from the rock ledges, which can be slippery. Take care if jumping, and never dive where you cannot confirm the depth. In summer a seasonal kiosk or boat service may operate.
