About Żejtun
Żejtun — south-eastern town: St Catherine's church, Roman villa and living
Żejtun (Iż-Żejtun) is an inland town in the South Eastern District of Malta, historically a centre of olive-oil production. It is known for the Baroque parish church of St Catherine by Lorenzo Gafà, the medieval old church of St Gregory, and the Żejtun Roman Villa. It holds the historic title Città Beland.
Where is Żejtun?
Żejtun lies in the south-east of Malta, inland from Marsaxlokk Bay, between Marsaskala, Żabbar, Tarxien and the southern coast. It belongs to the South Eastern District and sits on rising ground overlooking the surrounding agricultural area.
History of Żejtun
The Żejtun area has been inhabited since antiquity: the Żejtun Roman Villa, excavated beside the present St Thomas More school, preserves remains of a Roman farmstead with evidence of olive-oil pressing. The medieval church of St Gregory (San Girgor), with origins traced to the late medieval period, served as the area's old parish church and reflects the village's early importance. The later Baroque parish church of St Catherine was designed by the Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà around the turn of the 18th century. The town carries the title Città Beland.
