About Qormi
Qormi — inland town: bread tradition, St George's church and living
Qormi (Ħal Qormi) is a town in the Northern Harbour District of Malta, inland from the head of the Grand Harbour. Historically called Casal Fornaro, it is known as Malta's traditional bread-making town and holds the title Città Pinto. Its landmark is the Baroque church of St George.
Where is Qormi?
Qormi lies inland in the central harbour region of Malta, on low ground between Marsa, Ħamrun, Birkirkara, Santa Venera, Żebbuġ and Luqa. It belongs to the Northern Harbour District. Its low-lying position near the head of the Grand Harbour historically made parts of the town prone to flooding from valley run-off.
History of Qormi
Qormi was an important inland settlement from the medieval period, known for its bakeries — its old name Casal Fornaro reflects this baking tradition. In the 18th century it received the title Città Pinto from Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca. The Baroque parish church of St George is the town's principal landmark, and Qormi also has a second major parish dedicated to St Sebastian. The town's bread heritage is celebrated annually at the Lejlet Lapsi festival (Qormi Bread Festival).
