About Pembroke
Pembroke — coastal town: former barracks, St Andrew's and living
Pembroke is a town in the Northern Harbour District on the north-eastern coast of Malta. It is a relatively new locality developed from former British military barracks and training grounds, today a residential and educational area with a rocky coastline.
Where is Pembroke?
Pembroke lies on the north-eastern coast of Malta, beyond St Julian's and Paceville, bordering Swieqi and the Madliena area. It belongs to the Northern Harbour District and has a rocky coastline facing the open sea.
History of Pembroke
Pembroke originated as a British military area in the 19th and 20th centuries, with barracks, training grounds and a rifle range named after the Earl of Pembroke. After the British forces left, the area was redeveloped from the late 20th century into a residential town with educational and sports facilities, becoming a separate locality with its own council. Surviving military structures and the coastline reflect this history.
