Naxxar (In-Naxxar) is a town in the Northern District of Malta, on higher ground north-west of the central conurbation. It is known for the parish of Our Lady of Victories, the stately home Palazzo Parisio, the Victoria Lines defensive wall, and the MFCC exhibition centre.
Where is Naxxar?
Naxxar lies in the north of Malta, on higher ground above the central conurbation, bordering Mosta, Birkirkara, San Ġwann, Għargħur and the Madliena / Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq coastal area. It belongs to the Northern District. The Victoria Lines, a 19th-century British defensive wall, run along the ridge near Naxxar.
History of Naxxar
Naxxar is one of Malta's older parishes; tradition connects its name with St Paul preaching to the inhabitants after his shipwreck. Its parish church is dedicated to Our Lady of Victories. The town's best-known building is Palazzo Parisio, a stately home rebuilt and richly decorated in the early 20th century by the Scicluna family, with ornate interiors and formal gardens. The nearby Victoria Lines, built by the British in the late 19th century, run across the island along a natural escarpment passing the Naxxar area.
