About Rabat
Rabat — historic town: catacombs, Roman heritage, transport and living
Rabat is a town in the Western District of central Malta, adjoining the walled city of Mdina. Its name means "suburb," reflecting its origin as the settlement outside Mdina's walls. It is known for early Christian catacombs and Roman remains.
Where is Rabat?
Rabat lies in central Malta in the Western District, directly outside the walls of Mdina, with which it forms a single historic area. It is close to Mtarfa, Dingli and Attard, and sits on elevated ground in the centre of the island.
History of Rabat
Rabat occupies part of what was the Roman city of Melita, which extended beyond the later walls of Mdina. The area contains Roman-era remains and a network of underground early Christian burial sites. According to tradition, St Paul stayed in Malta after his shipwreck and is associated with a grotto in Rabat. The town grew over the medieval and later periods as the populated area outside Mdina's fortifications.
What to see in Rabat
St Paul's Catacombs — an extensive complex of underground early Christian and late Roman tombs, managed as a heritage site. Domvs Romana (Roman House) — the remains of a wealthy Roman townhouse with mosaics, displayed in a museum. Wignacourt Museum & St Paul's Grotto — a museum and the grotto associated with St Paul. St Paul's Church — a Baroque parish church in the town centre.
Transport in Rabat
Rabat is a bus hub for central Malta, with services connecting it to Valletta, the central towns and beyond via Malta Public Transport. It also serves as the access and parking point for visitors to neighbouring Mdina. Roads connect it to Dingli, Mtarfa and the surrounding villages.
Living in Rabat
Rabat is a historic central town with everyday amenities, schools and services, alongside major heritage sites. It offers a quieter, more residential alternative to the harbour towns while remaining central on the island. Cost and housing assessments should be based on current market data.
