What is Ġnejna Bay like?

Ġnejna Bay is a compact sandy beach of about 250 metres flanked by distinctive ochre-coloured clay hillsides that turn deep red at sunset. The water is clear and calm, protected from the prevailing winds by the surrounding ridgeline. Unlike Golden Bay, it has no large commercial facilities — a seasonal kiosk and basic toilets are the full extent. Behind the beach, traditional Maltese fishermen's huts (Maltese: għarex) are carved into the soft clay rock.

Getting to Ġnejna Bay

Ġnejna Bay is not served by bus. By car from Valletta, drive towards Mosta then take the Mġarr road; the bay is signposted from Mġarr village. The descent road is narrow and steep — large camper vans and coaches cannot access it. A small car park sits at the bottom of the hill. The nearest town is Mġarr, 2.5 km away.

Ġnejna and nearby beaches

Golden Bay is 3 km north by cliff-top path or car and offers far more facilities. The path between the two bays passes Għajn Tuffieħa (Red Tower Bay), another quiet rocky and sandy beach accessible via a 200-step descent. Together, the three bays form the best concentration of northwest Malta beaches.
